Dear Residents and Friends of the Mattituck Park District:
The Park District is thrilled to announce that we’ve begun revitalizing Sabat Field on Bay Avenue. This fall and next spring, we're planting a native pollinator meadow with a half-mile path through it, trimming phragmites, and adding a kayak storage and launch. Over the next few years, we will further revitalize the property by replacing the worn-out tennis courts with new ones in a different location on the property, putting a gazebo where the existing courts are, and building a small bridge across the narrow part of James Creek dividing our property.
Check out this drone footage by clicking here to get a sense of the “now” of the property—you'll see we’ve begun scraping the property to build berms along stretches of the property borders, berms that will eventually be 2-3 feet tall and have plantings on them. The berms will both provide buffering and make the property visually more interesting.
Remaking Sabat Field is the first of many projects necessary to repurpose and revitalize our park system, and we hope that as you see the changes, you become as excited about it as we are.
Our current work on the property is the prep work for Planting Day, when 1,750 plants will be delivered to Bay Avenue and need to be planted. We will need at least 50 volunteers to get all those plants in the ground between 1 pm and dark, and we hope that many more will join us. Many hands make light work.
Please, help us make our vision a reality by joining us on Planting Day, Saturday November 16, at 1 pm. (Rain date Sunday November 17 at 1 pm). Volunteer now clicking on this signup link.
Consider: If you volunteer on Planting Day, for the rest of your time living in the park district, you will be able to show your friends and neighbors the part of the meadow you created. You will have the satisfaction of knowing you restored native pollinator plants to what has long been essentially a sterile lawn. And you’ll have fun doing it with your friends and neighbors.
Please forward this email to family, friends, and neighbors who might be interested in learning about the Sabat Field Revitalization and joining us on Planting Day. If they are residents of the MPD but have not yet joined our mailing list, encourage them to do so by clicking here.
Last, we are holding an election on Thursday November 21 to elect a Commissioner for a three-year term. Please click here for more details.
THANK YOU to our first volunteer: North Fork Tree & Landscaping Inc., of Southold, who are donating woodchips we are using as mulch for the meadow.
